Thank you Somali guys!

A couple winters ago, my husband and I and our three kids were driving through Minneapolis when our car broke down. We sat there with our hazard lights blinking and waited for my father-in-law to come to our rescue after about 45 minutes. However, as we sat there in the cold, and waited, wondering if we'd make it on time to a special event where we had been heading, two separate people stopped to ask if we were ok and if there was anything they could do to help. Both were men who appeared to be Somali. They both noticed that we had kids in the car and were a bit concerned and wanted to offer to help if they could. Of course, we reassured them that help was on the way. This was a reminder of the way people in Morocco (where we used to live) stop when something is wrong, and especially how they care for children. What a striking experience for us here in our "home country". No one who looked like us - born and raised in Minnesota - seemed to give us a second glance. Those two kind men could have easily looked the other way, and thought to themselves, "They are from here. They have cell phones and money. They will be just fine. No reason to stop." But they didn't. I wonder if we would have done the same thing as a foreigner in Morocco. I don't think so, sadly. What a gift from our Muslim neighbors here! And what beautiful hospitality!
